Welcome to Fort Daniel!
In fifth grade we work hard, and we play hard. You will find that we are working hard writing narrative, persuasive, and informative pieces in preparation for the fifth grade writing test March 7th. Once the writing test is over, we will focus on writing poetry and plays, including radio plays and puppet plays to perform in class. So we will "work hard, play hard" in writing!
In science much of work is hands-on labs that require working well with your classmates in lab groups. Expected behaviors include: using a "group voice" not a "room voice" and following directions. The important thing about labs is that we are doing them for a reason. Your group will need to complete all sections of lab sheets so that you will understand why we are doing each activity. At the end of class we will discuss how the lab relates to the unit we are studying. Science is fun, but it is important to remember that it is fun with a purpose!
In reading you will be expected to select books on your reading level. On Wednesdays, our class visits the media center for book checkout and to complete the reference challenge. We also have media center lessons two times each month. Ms. Martinez, our media specialist, helps us learn more about research and reading at this time. You will be expected to keep a new reading log each time you start a new book. Turn the reading log in to your teacher when you return the book to the media center. Our class is active in reading Accelerated Reading books and earning our AR hats. Ms. Martinez will help set your goals so that you also have a chance to earn the extra special AR hats!
We are beginning to review what we have studied during the year. If at any time you realize that your didn't study a concept at your previous school, please let your teacher know so that she can catch you up on the topic!
